LADY WANDA'S ENCOURAGEMENT
YOUR WORDS HAVE POWER
Scripture Reference: Colossians 4:6. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
As a child, I remember my mother saying, “watch your mouth”. We teach our children the same lesson because we want them to be respectful when they speak to others. Believers quote the referenced scripture to teach new believers to be watchful how they speak and respond.
In the letter to the Colossians, Paul is asking the believers of Colossae to pray for him that he will be able to share the good news and declare the mystery of Christ even though this is why he is in prison. He tells them in Col 4:5, walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of their time. He wants them to stay focused on who they are in Christ and to show Christ to those who don’t know Him. In order to do this, he says in Col 4:6, Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. The salt reference comes from Matthew 5:13, which states: “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.
Just as the people of Colossae were encouraged by the Apostle Paul to let their speech be gracious (courteous and kind), we must also choose to be this way. We should never want to lose our salty taste. So, we must watch what we say and how we say it. God is always watching to see how we respond. The bible says in Proverbs 18:2 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. We must watch what comes out of our mouth. Even when you want to speak negatively (death), choose to speak positively (life). Proverbs 31:26 says: She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. Let the power of our words be positive, kind, and loving, then watch how God blesses our obedience. I know circumstances don’t always make us feel like responding positively, thank God we don’t have to respond out of our feelings. We have the ability to make a choice to speak in love no matter the circumstances. Be that “salt of the earth” that Matthew 5:13 is talking about. Allow the Lord to use you to speak life into someone and change their life.
Let’s Pray!
Holy Spirit, help me to make the right choices on how I respond in all situations, in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen
